Two writing workshops have been organised on the theme of flash fiction in Inverness by HighlandLIT.

The Less is More sessions will be led by Meg Pokrass, an American expat now living in the city, who is a gifted writer in the genre with hundreds of stories published and who has had work included in three recent Norton anthologies.

One of the workshops will be an in-person event at the Glen Mhor Hotel, and the other will be delivered online but will be identical in content – they are free to attend and people of all age groups are welcome.

The writer aims to inspire those attending to tackle flash fiction writing and guide them as they learn and apply the skills and techniques required in creating, editing and marketing short-form stories.

She says: “Flash fiction is more than just a miniature story told in under 1000 words. Flash fiction is a unique form of its own. The form is known for its inventiveness and often dream-like logic.

Ms Pokrass says she was drawn to the way excellent flash fiction created a feeling of intimate collaboration between reader and writer and a place that was both private and shared.

The in-person event will be held at the Glen Mhor Hotel, Ness Bank Hotel at 6.30pm on Tuesday and the online event will be at 6.30pm on Tuesday, August 23 – for the link to the online event, please email highlandlit.com@gmail.com

Ms Pokrass has taught flash fiction at literary festivals around the UK including Mslexia’s Mslexicon Festival, Huddersfield Literature Festival and the Nairn Book and Arts Festival.

HighlandLIT is an Inverness-based group, with a Highland-wide reach, which brings together writers of all levels of experience.
